Overcome Money Scarcity and Live A Rich Life

I have struggled throughout my life with a scarcity mindset, especially around finances.

I always felt like I didn’t have enough money and that I was behind. Behind what, who, and how- I didn’t know precisely. I just “knew” that I was behind, and it didn’t feel good.

The current state of our economy certainly does not help ease money worries, especially for those who are experiencing a real lack of finances and struggling to meet their basic needs. The worries are also often high for those who may currently be able to cover their expenses, but have previously faced times in their lives where there was a lack of food or housing security due to insufficient funds.

Scarcity mindset and feelings of financial lack can also impact individuals with high incomes and an abundance of money, though high income do not always equate to high networth depending on their spending habits.

How do we know if we have a true versus perceived lack of finances? How do we know if we are behind? How do we know if we have… enough?

I think one of the best gifts that we may provide ourselves is to understand our relationship with money, and define “enough” for ourselves. Without knowing what “enough” means for us, how do we know if we have it?

We may be tempted to compare to other people when trying to define enough, and think we don’t have enough, because someone else seems to be able to afford more luxury items, vacations, etc. I challenge you to consider if you actually want all the lavish things that we are taught money can buy and that we “should” want. Personally, I do not enjoy vacations, fancy restaurants, expensive hotels, etc. I enjoy a simple life and a relatively low cost of living. Thus, my definition of enough will be much different than those who value more expensive goods, enjoy travel, and/or have more individuals who depend on their income.

When defining “enough,” it is important to consider: What is YOUR enough based on the life you want for yourself? Detaching from what society tells us to want and trying to keep up with those around you.

Now, I do not feel it’s appropriate for me to talk about money without acknowledging real systemic barriers, privilege, and oppression that influence one’s access to money. I do not want to portray a belief that we can just think our way to financial wealth and manifest financial prosperity. I do want to support you in empowering yourself to optimize your relationship with money and your capacity to create financial security (and abundance) through leveraging what is in your control and influence, while acknowledging inequity as well as the role that our mindset around money may have on our financial situation.

As a first step - I invite you to consider what your relationship is with money, including how important it feels to make as much as possible and what your spending habits are like. How does your relationship with money impact you?

Then, define “enough.” If you don’t define “enough,” it may feel like you never have it which often leads to constant anxiety and feelings of lack. Anxiety around money is not typically an energy that leads to financial prosperity, and it may actually lead you to the exact fears you are trying to avoid which could look like less money and less enjoyment in your life due to feeling restricted and afraid of losing or spending money.

How would life change for you if you knew you had enough money and were free to enjoy your life without the burden of financial stress?
